Limerstone Farm

View ResultsUploaded 8 years ago

The third round of this year’s Pat Death Summer Series trials Championship was held at Limerstone Farm, courtesy of Geoff and Mary Case. The Club would like to thank them for welcoming us back to this brilliant venue. We would also like to thank Scott Milton and Steve Chase for plotting eight excellent sections, the Observers, Viki Taylor – the Club’s official photographer and to all those that helped clean up.

Three Expert riders competing today, headed up by Will West who finished eighteen marks ahead of his Brother, Jim with James Stay not too far behind in third. This win has sealed the 2017 Summer Series for Will, with one round still to go – Congratulations Will, very well done. Meanwhile Ben Read convincingly took the spoils in the Intermediate class, with a twenty-nine-mark advantage from Shaun Harris in second. Stuart Gummer finished in third despite a determined effort by Andy-Scott Jackson who this time had to settle for fourth.

The well contested Novice class proved to be a much closer affair, just seven marks separating the first four, resulting in an excellent win for Phil Chase. Ben Brodie and Keith Jacobs both finished on twenty-five – Ben was awarded second place recording twenty-two cleans to Keith’s nineteen. Paul Kent was just three more adrift in fourth spot – Top riding guys. Twin Shock specialist Nick Symes dropped just eight marks to secure his second win in this year’s Summer Series, Nick just needs to finish in the final round to take the Twin Shock Championship. Stewart Freeman was going fairly well before a heavy fall on his third lap spoilt his day.

Ellie Attrill delivered a perfect performance in the Adult Beginner class to finish the trial clean. Dan and Joe Taylor’s scores were tied on six, Dan was awarded second place, having travelled furthest with the least marks lost. Graham Bayton returned from almost a year’s absence. He eased himself back on the Beginner route in the Sportsman class, finishing clean from Harrison Brown in second only seven marks adrift.

The Youth classes were headed up by Jos Wright and Harvey Greive (Youth Experts) Jos took a convincing win from Harvey, sections one and two proving to make all the difference. Meanwhile things were much closer in the Youth Beginners – just one mark separating three riders! Alfie Haydon took the win with another perfect score from Harrison Crickmore in second with Josh Morris in third. Both Harrison and Josh finished on just a single dropped mark – for the second time today we had to resort to the TSR23(e) rule to separate these two – Fantastic riding by all three young riders.

The fourth and final round of the 2017 Summer Series will take place on Sunday 20th of August at 12 noon. The venue is still to be confirmed but will be available from the Club website: www.iowmcc.co.uk nearer the time. Then we return for the second half of the 2017 Winter Series on Sunday 3rd of September.

The second round of this year’s Pat Death Summer Series Championship was held on Sunday 18th June at Arreton Down. The Club would like to thank A. Brown Farms for inviting us to use this new venue. Thanks also to Mike Brown and Mark Coombes for their efforts in helping to clear the ground and assisting Malcolm Hawkins to set the sections. Malcolm had spent the best part of last week preparing ground that had not been trialled for nearly thirty years! Excellent effort by him.

The riders were presented with eight very good standard sections on what proved to be the hottest day of the year so far. There was an unprecedented amount of retirements (half of the original entry) this afternoon - due to a variety of reasons, most of these however were related to the very warm conditions.

The Expert class was won by series favourite, Will West for a loss of thirty-six. Will managed to hold on for the win despite a front brake problem during the later stages of the trial. James Stay was the only other Expert finisher and took a creditable and well-earned second place – sections three and six proved to separate these two. Course setter Malcolm Hawkins was rewarded with a win in the Intermediates, finishing with a very respectable total of forty-five - despite a spectacular crash on section two, on the first lap, ending up in a rather prickly bush!

Meanwhile Scott Milton took charge of the Clubman class with a convincing win from relative newcomer Harrison Brown. Scott completed the trial for a total of just fourteen to earn himself the maximum ten Championship points. Shaun Harris was the only Sportsman rider today and finished on a total of forty-two.

The closest contest of the day was between Novice riders, Phil Chase and Keith Jacobs. These two were very evenly matched for most of the trial but it was Phil who took the spoils, just two marks ahead of Keith. Ben Brodie was not too much further behind in third – excellent effort by all three. There was just one finisher in the Twin Shock class – Stuart Freeman managed to keep his air-cooled Honda going (not sure how much cooling was taking place) to secure the win.

Just two Youth riders competing this afternoon; Young Alfie Haydon (Youth Beginner) finished with the lowest score of the day, a miserly seven dropped marks. Alfie is noticeably gaining in confidence with every outing – keep up the good work Alfie. Jos Wright also rode a blinder in the Youth Expert class totalling just thirty-five – some excellent riding Jos, very well done.

The Club next meet for the penultimate Summer Series Round on Sunday July 16th starting at 12 noon. The venue will be available from the Club website nearer the time.

Pat Death Summer Series 1st Round:

The first round of the 2017 Pat Death Summer Series was held on Sunday 14th May at Shorwell Chalk Pit, courtesy of Mr Ralph Cook. We would like to thank Ralph for his continued support and for welcoming us back to Shorwell. Thanks are also in order to today’s course setter, Stewart Freeman, who managed to set eight excellent sections. Very many thanks to the Observers who gave up their time to help keep things moving and to Viki Taylor for her work with the camera.

The Summer Series is basically a mini Championship consisting of four Trials held in May, June, July and August. To qualify for an award, riders must complete a minimum, three out of the four available rounds. For those who take part in all four rounds, their best three finishes will count towards the Championship. There were four new members joining us this week, the Club would like to extend a very warm welcome to Tom Hawkins, Sam Hardy, Dean Old and Dan Flux. We hope they enjoyed the trial and we look forward to seeing them back again, in the near future.

Just two Youth riders this afternoon, Jos Wright in the Youth Twin Shock and Alfie Haydon (Youth Beginner) Both riders put in really good performances despite being unopposed. Jos managed to finish ahead of most of the Adult Twin Shock riders – including his Dad! Alfie completed the trial for a loss of just a single mark – very well done to both riders. The Expert class proved to be a close contest between brothers Will and Jim West. It was Will that took the win finishing on one with Jim just four more adrift with a total of five. Mick Brown and James Stay battled it out for the minor placings – Mick just about managed to finish in third spot on twelve with James just one more behind to take fourth. James must be pleased with his performance, this being his first attempt on the Expert route – good effort.

Shaun Harris headed up the Intermediate class from Malcolm Hawkins in second and Geoff Taylor in third. Shaun’s first trial on his brand new Sherco undoubtedly helped him to take the win by a single mark from Malcolm - in what proved to be the closest contest of the day. Geoff did very well to finish just five more behind for a solid third place finish. Scott Milton found things quite lonely in the Clubman class, despite riding unopposed he recorded a very competitive score to secure another ten Championship points. John Townsend (British) and Andy Ryall (Over 50) both earned maximum points this afternoon with some great riding, both should be very pleased with their performances.

The Novice class was won by the improving Keith Jacobs who fought off a determined effort from another improving rider, Martin Moore – just three marks separating the two. Phil Chase finished comfortably ahead of brother Steve to seal his third place. Nick Symes (Twin Shock class) joined young Alfie Haydon and Will West to finish with the lowest totals of the day loosing just a single mark – it was the tricky right turn, dropping back down the banking on section two that caught him out, but an excellent ride none the less. Calvin Wright managed to grab second spot from returning Twin Shock specialist Stewart West. It was brilliant to see Stewart back riding again, hopefully we will see him out a bit more often from now on.

Another two returning riders today, Father and Daughter duo, Mike and Ellie Attrill were back in action in the Adult Beginners – Ellie had the upper hand to finish ahead of Mike who was forced to settle for third. New member, Dan Flux put in an excellent performance to finish in second spot – very well done to all three riders. Mike had of course taken part in the recent Wight Two Day 50th Anniversary Trial, in memory of his Dad Aubrey. We can now announce the winner of the new Two Day Award ‘The Malcolm Wells Award for Endeavour’ for 2017 is Nigel Crouch. Sharon Youngman was a very close second and the Club have offered Sharon a free entry for next year’s Two Day Trial – the full details are available from the Club website.

The 2nd round of the Summer Series will take place on Sunday June 18th, starting at 12 noon. The venue is still to be confirmed but will be available from the Club website nearer the time.

50th Wight Two Day, Sunday Results & Final Standings :

Bembridge & Knighton

View ResultsUploaded 8 years ago

The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club held its annual Wight Two Day trial on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd April. This year being the event’s 50th Anniversary, the Club were determined this be a memorable event. The first Wight Two Day took place in March 1967. There were two venues in use on both days this year and the Club would like to thank the Landowners Mr Roger Morgan for the use of Knighton and Mr Rob Taylor for Bembridge down. Very many thanks also to the course setters, who’s role was vital – the pressure was on them to build twelve good standard sections at each venue! Alan Gosden, Simon Newnham, George Gosden and Malcolm Hawkins at Knighton, with Rory Stephens and Geoff Taylor at Bembridge, assisted at both venues by Stewart Freeman and Nick Symes – excellent work.

We were always hoping for a bumper entry for this special event but could not have imagined the amazing response that saw an entry of 135 riders. Saturday’s proceedings were based at what proved to be a sun soaked Knighton pit and after the important rider’s briefing, the trial started bang on time at 11am. We were effectively running two separate trials on each day – an all ‘off road’ trial and a trial that included road work, the Club wanted to include roadwork (for some riders) as this was the original format used in 1967.

The Club organised a free social evening on the Saturday, held at Smallbrook Stadium. This proved to be a very popular addition, a chance to relax and discuss the day’s events whilst sipping some suitable beverages! The Club used this opportunity to make a rather special presentation to ACU Centre Steward, Terry Graves in recognition for all his help and support for almost all of the trials fifty-year history. There was a second presentation made to the very unsuspecting Wayne Brodie for all his efforts - both recipients were touched and very grateful. There were twenty-three different classes on offer, the intention was to be as inclusive as possible. This trial incorporated the ACU Southern Centre Championship too. Some superb riding by so many different riders – too many to mention here but there was a very special class of riders taking part this weekend, John Swaffield, Adrian Medley, Graham Baldwin and Nigel Crouch all competed in the ‘67 trial. The Original riders class was won by what must surely be the performance of the weekend, Nigel Crouch found the strength and the energy from somewhere to complete both days finishing on an amazing total of just 47 marks. Graham Baldwin managed to keep going and secured second place – excellent effort by all four riders.

Two Island riders completed the trial without loosing a single mark! Chris Stay completely dominated the Expert class, which saw a very strong mainland entry. This is thought to be the first time that an Expert rider has finished clean at a Wight Two Day. Chris did have the home advantage but this was never the less an outstanding effort from this talented home grown rider. Ross Haydon also finished the weekend with a clean sheet. Ross competed in the Twinshock, class 8, on his Fantic machine – Very well done to both. In all Island riders totted up eight first, three second and five third places finishes. The best mainland performances came from Matt Sleep (Twinshock Hard, with roadwork) Geoff Muston (class 2) Geoff Cornes (class 4) Mark Baldock (class 5) Mick Baldock (class 6) Tom Bartrum (class 7) Jack Dance (class 19) David Bathe (class 16) Nigel Brimecombe (class 17) Tom Frearson (class 20) Reece Talbot (class 21) and Max Dance in class 22.

The Club would like to finish by thanking all those that traveled from far and wide to make this an incredibly successful and memorable Golden Anniversary Wight Two Day Trial.

The Downend Cup:

Newbarn Farm, Courtesy of Mr Chris Spence.

View ResultsUploaded 8 years ago

The sixth round of the Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club’s 2017 Winter trials Championship was held at Newbarn Farm, Calbourne, on Sunday 2nd March. The Club would like to thank Chris Spence for welcoming us back to what is a great trials venue. We would also like to thank the course setter, Andy Ryall, assisted by Stewart Freeman for eight brilliant sections, Viki Taylor for her great camera work, the Observers and to all those that helped to clear up afterwards – very much appreciated.

Four Expert riders battled it out for the top honours in the sun soaked Newbarn venue. In his first outing this year, Will West took the win with a perfect performance, cementing his Club Expert Champion status. Jim West, also returning after a seven month break secured second place with a total of thirteen from Simon Newnham in third – these two were separated by just one mark – some very good riding by all three. Ben Read, as steady as ever, put in a confident performance and proved to be the clear winner in the well contested Intermediate group of riders, finishing with a total of just nine marks. Alan Gosden must be pleased with his effort, earning himself a good second place finish. Stuart Gummer and Malcolm Hawkins scores were tied on twenty-eight, Stuart was awarded third spot finishing with nineteen cleans to Malcolm’s seventeen.

Another well contested class involved the Novice riders and was won by John Coombes with a total of nineteen. Ben Brodie kept his concentration to secure second spot finishing ahead of the improving and friendly rival, Keith Jacobs in third - It won’t be too long before Keith earns his first Novice class win. Scott Milton was the only Clubman class rider this afternoon, he never the less posted a very competitive score for his ten Championship points. Another lone rider, Stewart Freeman (Twin Shock class) had a really good first two laps but following a heavy landing on the rocks at section eight, Stewart injured an arm and a leg, he was forced to retire - although because he had completed over half the trial he was still awarded his Championship points.

Harvey Grieve led the Youth riders in the Youth Expert class – Harvey’s score doesn’t do him any justice - his bike let him down for most of the trial, despite the frustrating problems he kept going determined to finish the trial – very good effort Harvey. Meanwhile in the Youth Beginner class Harrison Crickmore has overcome some recent, annoying fuel starvation problems with his Beta to take a clear win from Joe Taylor in second. Joe’s confidence is steadily increasing with every outing – very well done lads, keep up the good work. This trial concludes the first half of the 2017 Winter Series Championship, the next Club trial will see the start of the Pat Death Summer Series on Sunday May 21st, please keep an eye on the Club website nearer the time for the full details.

The next event however is the 50th Golden Anniversary Wight Two Day (open) Trial – 22nd and 23rd April. We have had an amazing response – there are to date 124 confirmed entries. The entry window is now less than two weeks from closing – if you are planning on taking part and to avoid disappointment, you have until Friday April 14th to get your paperwork sent in. We will not be accepting any late entries after this date!

All the details are available from the Club’s website simply click on the ‘forms’ section for the Reg's and entry form.

The Jeffries Cup:

Apes Down, courtesy of Mrs Jane Bull

View ResultsUploaded 8 years ago

The fifth round of the IOWmcc’s 2017 Winter Trials Championship was held at Apes Down, Calbourne on Sunday 19th March. The Club would like to thank Mrs Jane Ball for allowing us back to an excellent trials venue. Very many thanks also to Mr Mark Coombes, who once again put himself forward, to set eight really good sections. Mark spent most of Wednesday cutting out and plotting the sections, the weather forecast at that point was warning of rain over the weekend and so the sections were set with that in mind. Thankfully the rain stayed away leaving loads of grip across the venue. Very many thanks to the Observers (brilliant to see, but we need more!) and finally thanks to all that stayed behind to help clear up afterwards.

Some very close riding this afternoon which resulted with three separate tied scores. Mark Coombes and Simon Newnham (Expert class) were locked together all the way, both riders were clean apart from the tricky section six where they both lost a single mark on their first lap. With absolutely nothing to separate the two, both were awarded ten Championship points – brilliant effort by both. Mick Brown finished in third with a very respectable score. The Intermediate class proved to be a clear win for Stuart Gummer but this class saw another two ties. Alan Gosden just managed to grab second spot from Andy Scott-Jackson who were both on twenty-one, Alan notched up two more cleans. Malcolm Hawkins and Geoff Taylor were only just off the pace in fourth and fifth respectively. Mark Gray and Simon Watmough finished in sixth and seventh, both riders on thirty-two with 19 cleans, Mark recording four ones to Simon’s three.

Despite being the only Clubman rider, Scott Milton never the less posted an excellent score, loosing just four marks for the day. Keith Jacob’s recent training session certainly paid off helping him to his first Novice class win. Keith finished six clear of second placed rider John Coombes with Dan Wisemellor in third – very well done Keith. Twin Shock rider, Nick Symes took the win with a faultless performance, completing the trial without loosing a single mark. Stewart Freeman secured second on a total of ten. John Townsend and Martin Moore were the only riders in the British Bike and Sportsman classes, both earning themselves maximum points.

The Youth classes were headed up once again by Jos Wright (Youth Expert). Jos put in a confident performance finishing the trial for a total of nineteen. Alfie Haydon is definitely getting to grips with his relatively new 80cc machine – Alfie lost just three marks in the Youth Beginner’s. Josh Morris kept his concentration to stay ahead of third place finisher Joe Taylor.

The Club next meet on Sunday 2nd April for the Downend Cup at Newbarn Farm, near Calbourne. This will be the last Club trial before what will be the highlight of the year – The 50th Wight Two Day Open Trial. We are so pleased by the support being shown, the entry will be well over 100 riders. With this amazing response in mind - we have to announce that the entry will close on Friday 14th April. Unfortunately no entries can be accepted after this date, if you want to take part then please send your paperwork off in plenty of time! All the info you need is available from the Club’s website.

View ResultsUploaded 8 years ago

The fourth round of the Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club Winter Trials Championship was held at Pagham Farm, Rookley, the Club would like to thank A. Brown Farms for welcoming us back to this brilliant venue. Thanks also to Stuart Gummer and Martin Moore who cleared the ground to set eight excellent sections. Thanks to Viki Taylor for her work with the camera and to the posse of people who helped to clear up afterwards.

Rob Howard and Simon Newnham were locked in a very close battle for the top honours in the Expert class, it was Rob who emerged the winner from Simon, just two marks separating the two. Mick Brown put in a confident performance to secure the third spot. Meanwhile in the well contested Intermediate class, Ben Read had total command, he proved to be the clear winner with an inspired effort. Things were much closer for the minor placings – Mark Gray just held on to take second place from Andy Scott-Jackson by a single mark. Course setter, Stuart Gummer, decided to take a full on backwards plunge into the stream which helped relegate him into fourth place – very good effort though!

Despite being the only rider in the Clubman class, Scott Milton finished with a very respectable score on his way to another ten Championship points. Novice rider, Ben Brodie continues to improve with another convincing win from Keith Jacobs in second and Phil Chase in third. Paul Kent eventually finished in fourth following some very annoying mechanical problems. Nick Symes was the lone rider in the Twin Shock class, Nick did seem to struggle at times with a few uncharacteristic maximum five point penalties. John Townsend (British Bike class) was another victim of reliability issues with his bike and was forced to retire early on into the trial. Just two Adult beginners competing this afternoon which saw Steve Chase take the win from Course setter, Martin Moore, some very close riding here – section eight proved to be the decider with only three marks separating the two.

Jos Wright headed up the Youth classes (Youth Expert) Jos should be more than happy with his performance, finishing with a score to rival the Adults on the same route! Harrison Crickmore took top spot in the Youth Beginner’s securing the win from friendly rival Alfie Haydon – both riders were affected by some unexpected fuel/carburettor issues with their Beta 125 machines! Excellent effort by all three riders.

The Club next meet on Sunday 19th March for the Jeffries Cup. The venue is still to be confirmed but all the details will be available from the Club website once the details have been finalised.

The third round of the Isle of Wight motorcycle Club’s 2017 Winter Championship was held at Shorwell Chalk Pit, courtesy of Mr Ralph Cook, on Sunday 12th February. The Club would like to thank Ralph for welcoming us back to what is a brilliant trials venue. Thanks also to Mark Coombes, who once again gave up his time to set the trial. Mark even managed to develop some new ground, presenting the riders with eight excellent sections – brilliant effort Mark. Very many thanks also to Viki Taylor who braved the bitterly cold conditions to capture the day’s events with her camera.

We would like to welcome two new members, Martin Moore and young Tobin Taylor. Martin finished his first trial with a win in the Sportsman class whilst Tobin, who is just eight years old, treated today as a practise session on his electric powered Osset machine. We look forward to seeing them both at future events.

Just two Expert riders, Simon Newnham and Mark Coombes, battled for the top honours. Simon just about held on to take the win in this evenly matched contest. Only three marks between them – good effort by both riders. The well contested Intermediate group of riders proved to be another close affair. Rory Stephens emerged the winner from Andy Scott-Jackson in second. Mike Taylor finished in third, by the narrowest of margins, from Stuart Gummer in fourth. Scott Milton returned to trials today this time on a twin shock machine. Scott was the lone rider in the Clubman class but never the less put in a confident performance recording the lowest total for the day dropping just five marks.

Ben Brodie also rode very well in the Novice class to take the win from the improving Phil Chase in second. Keith Jacobs finished in third spot, once again just a single mark between these two. Paul Kent suffered a few mechanical problems but managed to complete the trial to finish in fourth place. British Bike rider John Townsend must be pleased with his performance, John’s bike has been dogged with reliability problems recently but the Triumph behaved itself and helped John collect his ten Championship points. Steve Chase rode unopposed in the Adult Beginner class and earned himself another win - The beginner’s course was made up of just seven sections - section eight, a steep winding climb was judged to be too difficult for this group of riders.

The Youth classes were headed up by Jos Wright and Harvey Grieve in the Youth Expert class. Jos proved to be the clear winner today whilst Harvey is improving well having recently moved up from the Novice course. Brendon Penn rode a blinder in the Youth Novice class, despite riding unopposed, he finished the day with the second lowest total of only ten. Meanwhile things were very close between Harrison Crickmore and Alfie Haydon who finished first and second respectively in the Youth Beginner’s with just three marks separating the two. Alfie did well to even finish after a spectacular crash, hurting his knee, on the tricky section three. Joe Taylor continues to improve and posted a good third place finish for a valuable five Championship points – excellent effort by all these youth riders.

The Club next meet on Saturday evening for the annual Awards evening. The next Club trial will take place on Sunday 5th March. Please keep an eye on the Club website: www.iowmcc.co.uk where the full details will appear nearer the time. Entries for this year’s 50th Golden Anniversary Wight Two Day Trial, 22nd and 23rd April are steadily coming in with confirmed riders from Australia, Northern Ireland, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Counties a bit closer to home. If you plan to take part please send your entries in sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment.

The Mercury Cup:

Lee Copse, Bouldnor, courtesy of Ann and John Gustar

View ResultsUploaded 9 years ago

The second round of the 2017 Winter trials Championship took place on Sunday 22nd January at Lee Copse, Bouldnor. The Club are very grateful to Ann and John Gustar for allowing us the use of the copse and for making space for parking. – fantastic hosts. The Club would also like to thank Simon Newnham, Malcolm Hawkins, Stuart Gummer and Mark Coombes who between them cleared the ground and provided us with eight excellent sections. There were concerns beforehand about just how wet the ground would be - we need not have worried – all were surprised at just how much grip they found helping to make this a very enjoyable trial. The days antics were captured on camera by Viki Taylor – very many thanks Viki, we all appreciate your efforts.

The Club would like to welcome new member – Paul Brading. Paul has been heavily involved in motorcycle sport on the Island over the years but this was only his second attempt at trials riding.

Two of today’s course setters battled for the top honours in the Expert class. Simon Newnham took the win from Mark Coombes, section seven proving pivotal. Simon managed to stay in front despite going over the handle bars, twice – good effort! The very well contested Intermediate class was convincingly won by Ben Read who with an inspired ride finished forty-three marks clear of second place finisher Malcolm Hawkins. Stuart Gummer was close behind in third – only two marks separated these two. Stuart Gummer and Mike Taylor’s scores were tied – Gummer was awarded third place by notching up more cleans with Mike having to settle for fourth. James Craven should also be pleased with his performance, in this his first attempt at the more difficult ‘B’ route.

Ben Brodie emphatically took the Novice class, dropping just ten marks for the day. Phil Chase battled hard to finish in second place and new to trials, Paul Brading with a solid third place finish. Only one Twin Shock rider this afternoon – Nick Symes, never the less Nick posted the lowest total for the day loosing a miserly six marks to earn another maximum ten Championship points.

Just two riders on the Beginner routes, Steve Chase (Adult) and Josh Morris (Youth). Steve must be happy with his score, he lost just sixteen marks and most of those were on the tricky section one. Young Josh is steadily building up his confidence following a scary crash, a few trials back. Josh showed good determination to keep going and notch up his first win of the season – very well done young man.

The Club’s Awards dinner and dance night is fast approaching (Feb 18th) don’t miss out on what promises to be a really good night out for all the family. All the info and menu choices are available in the ‘forms’ section of the Club website. Completed forms need to be returned by Feb 4th please.
