Very many thanks to The Morgan Family for welcoming us back at Nodewell - very much appreciated. Ross and Alfie Haydon set 8 superb sections, something to test everyone & our thanks to the 4 Observers - who give up their time to help keep the trial flowing.

Congratualations to Ross Haydon who was presented The Matt Russell Cup (Best Intermediate Rider) by Matthew's Dad, Tony Russell. Ross just held on for the win, by 1 mark, from Adam Morgan.

The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club held the 6th round of the 2021 Winter Series Trials Championships at Duxmore Quarry, Downend on Sunday 10th October. The usual 4 laps of 8 sections were skilfully set by Jona & Ben Read, Scott Milton and Steve Chase to test the skill, balance, and control of the riders together with the reliability of their bikes. The Club would like to welcome three new members; Dave Elford, Derek Farndell & Rob Payne – we hope they all enjoyed the experience & we look forward to seeing them back very soon.

There were just two Expert competitors to start the trial, but the field was halved after just one lap when Rob Howard retired. Despite being left out on his own, Tom Richards managed to post a very good score to finish with a total of 54 marks. Meanwhile over in the Intermediates, Ross Haydon put in a perfect ride, completing the four laps without loosing a single dab. Sonny Gaskin found the course considerably more challenging - but held on to take the second place, for a well-deserved seven championship points. Andy Scott-Jackson continues to build a significant lead in the Over 50’s championship, with a superb performance, taking the win for a loss of just 43. John Coombes crossed the line in second for 86 with Phil Chase in third on 102.

The Twin Shock class was headed up by pre-trial favourite, Nick Symes. Nick made light work of the tricky Duxmore course and became the second rider to achieve a perfect score at the event. Jos Wright swapped his Mono Shock machine for the twin shock Ossa to take the second spot, for a loss of just 15. The competition proved to be much closer in the Novice’s, which resulted in a very narrow win for Tristan Osborne with a creditable score of 8. Mike True continues to improve finishing just 2 more behind in second. Ben Ashcroft found section 4 a little challenging which undoubtably relegated him into third place this time out. Adult Easy class favourite, Kevin Smith easily took the top spot from the 3 new members, Derek Farndell finished on 50 with Dave Elford in third on 58. Rob Payne was only 9 more adrift to finish 4th.

The lack of Youth Experts or Intermediates meant that Harrison Crickmore headed up the Youth riders by winning the popular Youth Novice class. Harrison took the win with a slender margin, just 2 marks ahead of the fast-improving Freddie Death, who finished on 14. Riley True bagged the third spot, holding off a determined challenge from Ollie Elford in fourth – only 4 marks separated these two. Ajay Shaw completed the trial in fifth securing three championship points – superb effort by this bunch of young riders and well worth keeping an eye on their progress as the competition between them is bound to be tight. Riley Baker was the lone Youth Easy rider, but he certainly seemed to enjoy himself. His confidence levels will certainly improve with experience.

We would like to thank all the Observers who make so much difference by helping the trial to flow smoothly and Viki Taylor (Lazy tuna photography) for all her hard work, capturing all the action, through the lens.

The 7th Championship round will be The Matt Russell Memorial Trial, 24th October at Nodewell Farm, Totland. Online entry will be available from 8am on Monday. Hope to see you all there.

An interesting tie break for 2nd spot in the Inters between Mad Dog & Adam Morgan - a bit of a brain teaser (this time of night) but the Mad Dog just about pawed his way in front!

The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club staged its flagship event: The Wight Two Day Trial on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th September 2021. The trial has been run annually since 1967 but this year’s trial had been delayed from April 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions – only the second time in the trial’s 55-year history that circumstances prevented it from taking place! The Foot & Mouth outbreak in 2000 being the other.

Spread across 2 venues, Saturday’s proceedings kicked off at Knighton Sandpit with Sunday’s finale being held at Bembridge Down. The Club would like to thank the respective Landowners; Mr Roger Morgan and Mr Rob Taylor for helping us to deliver another very successful Wight Two Day Trial.

Organisers were unsure what the impact on entries would be considering the continuing Covid-19 global pandemic – but they needn’t have worried. The entry opened on June 4th and the 150-rider limit was sold out in just 6 days!

Both venues consisted of 15 sections, riders had to complete 3 laps at each venue. Knighton’s course was restricted to 14 sections following an incident at section 15 early on into the trial. The section remained closed, due to the one-and-a-half-hour delay, which made it impossible for the 150 strong field to ride that section within the 6-hour time limit.

The trial was won by two Isle of Wight MCC Expert riders; Chris Stay and George Gosden. Both completed the weekend without dropping a single mark. Outstanding performance from these talented competitors – the concentration required to post 87 clean rides, over 2 days is nothing but incredible! Tom Culliford (Kingswood MCC) and Tom Moss (Eastbourne and District MCC) took second and third respectively for a loss of 20 and 31. Youth rider Alfie Haydon proved to be the only other Isle of Wight competitor to score a win. Alfie took the ‘Youth B’ class with a convincing performance over fellow IOWMCC rider; Alfie Gaskin who finished in second. Congratulations to Waltham Chase Trials MCC members – between them they took 5 class wins. Superb effort from our neighbouring club, bring on 2022!

The 2021 BigHobbler Trial was held at Sheep Lane Farm, Blackgang on Sunday 8th of August. This trial is held annually in memory of Nigel Crouch. Nigel very sadly passed away early in 2018 – sorely missed but he is very fondly remembered.

On offer today was the usual 4 laps of 8 sections followed by an array of food including treats from the bbq, cream teas along with coffee and cake, all courtesy of ‘Dr Cook & his able assistant Mr Rob’. Helping us to celebrate Nigel’s memory in style. The big man would have loved it. The Club would like to thank everyone involved in staging the event – a superb effort by many different people and a very good example of what can be achieved when Club members pull together.

The ‘drama’ began well before the trial had even started! Following the deluge of early morning rain that made access to the parking area very difficult indeed. So much so, many of the vehicles had to be towed onto site. Thankfully, everybody did get in, with enough time to make those final adjustments before setting off for the first section. This trial was never intended to be a full-on competitive event, but one of remembrance and a celebration of the gentle giant. However, a trial just wouldn’t be a trial without a set of results.

There were two Awards (not necessarily results based) up for grabs. This year, The Nigel Crouch Memorial Cup is awarded to Ajay Shaw. This was Ajay’s first ever trial! Ajay finished first in the Youth Easy class. Nigel was very well known for his efforts to support and inspire the younger riders and this year’s award is exactly in keeping with Nigel’s legacy. We would like to extend a very warm welcome to Ajay and we look forward to seeing him riding again very soon.

The second Award (The Nigel Mason Crouch True Spirit award) goes to John Townsend. John is the club’s oldest rider & he gets the award for 2 reasons: Whilst others struggled to get onto site, John simply mastered the slippery slope as if it wasn’t even there! Then with just 2 sections to go, his bike suffered a mechanical breakdown, leaving him stranded at the furthest point of the trial – John managed to push his very heavy BSA almost all the way back to the pits, unaided, turning down offers of help (as he didn’t want to inconvenience anyone). Now that’s proper true spirit! I’m pleased to say that help was eventually forthcoming, and John was very appreciative. Congratulations to both these worthy award winners.

Chris Stay (2019 British Expert Trials Champion) completed the trial clean. It was great to see Chris entertaining everybody with his brilliant riding skills in the Elite class. Only one rider competed on the Expert route – Ross Haydon stepped up from the Inters especially for today. Ross mastered the more difficult route to finish on a total of only 5 marks – going clean on 5 of the eight sections. Perhaps he will consider moving to the Experts for the 2022 Championship. The competition was very tight in the Intermediates, but Rory Stephens made it all look too easy, by winning the class without dropping a single mark. Adam Morgan finished second on 1, with a superb performance by the fast-improving Dan Locke in third for a loss of just 5 – excellent riding by these three. Veteran rider, Alan Stay was the third competitor to go clean on the Blackgang course to take the win in the Clubman’s. Geoff Taylor wasn’t too far behind finishing on 5. Meanwhile in the Over 50’s, Stuart Gummer finished 7 marks ahead of friendly rival Phil Chase in this two-horse race.

Paul Baldwin was out on his own in the British Bike class, but despite this, he posted an impressive score. Piloting Nigel’s beloved Greeves trials bike around the eight sections for a loss of just 11 marks. Andy Scott-Jackson caused an upset by winning the Twin Shock (C) class from pre-trial favourite Alan Gosden with a 5-mark cushion - section 7 proved to be the difference here. Jos Wright claimed the third spot crossing the finish line with a respectable total of 11. Sam Jurich won the Novice class with a clear 9-mark advantage from Tristan Osborne in second on 28, with Ben Ashcroft just 1 more mark behind in third. The Twin Shock (D) class ended in a tie between Wayne Brodie and John Gustar, both dropping 2 marks each – Brodie was awarded first place by travelling furthest with the least marks lost. Nigel’s good friend, Dave Rose had to settle for the third place (for a loss of just 3) on this occasion.

The pick of the popular Sportsman classes came from Tom Richards (B route) and Paul Kent on the C route. Tom finished with a total of 7 on his twin shock Honda. Paul had a superb ride, on his all-electric powered trials bike, for a loss of only 3 marks – equalling the lowest score on the C route! Perhaps battery powered bikes are the future after all?

The Youth classes were headed up by Alfie Haydon (Youth Expert). Alfie crossed the line dropping just a single mark! Fantastic result for this young and exceptionally talented rider. Alfie Gaskin found sections 1 and 6 quite challenging but mastered the remaining 6 sections to claim a creditable second place.

The Youth Novice class proved to be a convincing win for Freddie Death, another fast-improving young rider. Freddie finished on 18. Harrison Crickmore did very well to hold onto the second spot by 2 marks from Kaidan Cutts in third. Debutant rider Ajay Shaw (Youth Easy) finished on 13 – unlucky for some, but not today! Ajay, winner of ‘The Nigel Crouch Memorial Cup’ should be very pleased with his performance. Tobin Howard earned a good second place riding his electric ‘Osset’ machine.

Despite the tricky weather conditions early on, the event is being hailed as a great success and regardless of those individual rider scores – Nigel will never be forgotten.

The third and final round of The 2021 Pat Death Summer Series Trials Championships was held at a blisteringly hot Knighton Sand Pit. The Club would like to thank Mr Roger Morgan for welcoming the Club back to this superb venue.

We also say a special thank you to the Observers; Adrian Daish, Mike Morris, Richard Crickmore and Geoff Taylor together with Viki Taylor who captured all the action through the lens. The course Setters; Steve & Phil Chase, Adam Morgan, Daryl Biles and Andy Scott-Jackson thoughtfully set, all but one of the eight, sections in the woods - providing the Observers & Riders an escape from the blisteringly hot sunshine.
