The Duver Cup:
Knighton Sand Pit
The Isle of Wight motorcycle club held the final round of the 2016 Winter Trials Championship on Sunday 4th December at Knighton Sand Pit, Newchurch. The Club would like to thank the landowner, Mr Roger Morgan, for welcoming us back to this excellent venue. Very many thanks also to Nick Symes, assisted by his band of merry helpers, for eight fun but challenging sections and to Viki Taylor who braved the biting cold wind to record the day’s events with her camera.
The Expert class was won by Will West who lost just nine marks, all on the tricky section four. Rob Howard pushed Will all the way - but finished in second, only five marks between these two. Simon Newnham battled on well to secure third spot. Ben Read proved to be the clear winner of the well contested Intermediate class. Ben completed the trial with the lowest total of the day – a miserly seven dropped marks. Andy Scott-Jackson just about took second place from Mike Taylor in third. Andy’s final attempt on the graded hill climb (section eight) was very impressive, pretty much all on the rear wheel, I’m not sure it was planned that way but it looked awesome for the spectators!
James Craven should be really pleased with his performance, the clear winner of the Novice group of riders – great effort James. Keith Jacobs must also be happy to settle in second with Phil Chase in third. Course setter, Nick Symes was the only Twin Shock rider today and added another, maximum, ten Championship points to his seasons tally.
Phil Silvester finished the year on a high with another win in the Adult beginner class, despite riding unopposed, today’s result has earned him his first Winter series Championship – great achievement Phil, very well done. Meanwhile Jos Wright rode an absolute blinder in the Youth Expert class, his section scores rivalled some of the adults on the B course. Harrison Crickmore sealed the Youth Beginner’s Championship - emerging as the clear winner today from the improving Josh Morris. The beginners were presented with a separate section eight, the graded hill was deemed to be too difficult for the beginners to attempt. – however the youngsters found the alternative (rocky) section to be rather testing too - I understand they nick-named it 'the nut cracker'! Very good effort by both riders.
The Club next meet on Boxing Day at Shorwell Chalk Pit for the annual Father and Son trial. At the earlier than usual start time of eleven o-clock. Prizes are on offer for the best Adult and Youth fancy dressed riders. I hope to see you all then. The Club would like to wish all its members, land owners, friends and associates a very happy Christmas and best wishes for 2017.
The Club will be returning to Knighton in April 2017 for the 50th Golden Anniversary Wight Two Day Trial. The Reg’s and entry form are available from the Club website and entries are now open. We are expecting a bumper entry so please get your paperwork sent in sooner rather than later to secure your place in this historic Club milestone.
The Ted Phillips Cup:
Haslett Sand Pit
The penultimate round of the Isle of Wight mcc’s 2016 Winter trials Championship was held on Sunday 27th November at Haslett Farm, Shorwell. The Club would like to thank Mr Glen Draper for welcoming us back to this superb venue. Very many thanks also to Mark Coombes and Nick Symes, today’s course setters who between them set eight good and testing sections.
Rob Howard took the top honours finishing the clear winner in the Expert class from Simon Newnham, sections five and seven made all the difference. Meanwhile the well contested Intermediate class was won by Mark Coombes – Mark also sealed the Championship with today’s win. Ben Read put in a great performance though to finish in second with Andy Scott-Jackson third. Malcolm Hawkins did well just to finish the trial after injuring his hand shortly before the start.
The Novice group of riders was headed up, once again, by Ben Brodie with an excellent performance. Brodie finished twenty-five marks clear of second place rider Keith Jacobs with the improving Phil Chase in third spot. Phil Silvester took the win in the Adult Beginners, completing the trial with the lowest total for the day – just six dropped marks and moves one step closer to his first Winter Championship title. Steve Chase finished in second.
Three Youth finishers today led by Harvey Grieve in the Youth Novice class and despite riding unopposed he put in a determined effort for his ten Championship points. Young Josh Morris should be over the moon with his ride. Josh notched up his first ever win in the Youth Beginners, two marks clear of second place finisher and Championship leader Harrison Crickmore. Excellent effort by both riders.
The final round of the 2016 Championship will take place on Sunday December 4th starting at 12 noon. The venue is still to be confirmed, please keep an eye on the Club website for the full details.
The 50th Golden Anniversary Wight Two Day Trial (22nd & 23rd April 2017) Reg’s and Entry form are available from the website and entries are now open. We are expecting a bumper entry for this special event so please get your paperwork sent in sooner rather than later! We can now announce Sammy Miller - eleven times British and two times European Trials Champion (who also won the Wight Two Day Trial, a record seven times) has agreed to make the journey across the Solent to set the riders off on the Saturday, to help mark this important milestone in the Club’s history.
The Matt Russell Memorial Trial:
Nodewell Farm, courtesy of the Morgan Family
The annual Matt Russell Memorial Trial was held on Sunday 06/11/16 at Nodewell Farm, Totland. The Club would like to thank the Morgan Family for welcoming us back for this special event. Very many thanks also to Viki Taylor for her excellent camera skills.
Matt was a popular and a well-liked member of the Club. He was an accomplished Intermediate class rider who tragically and suddenly lost his life at the age of just twenty-nine. His close friend, Ross Haydon assisted by Keith Jacobs were today’s course setters. Matt’s Dad, Tony Russell accompanied by Simon Morgan presented the ‘Matt Russell Cup’ to Andy Scott-Jackson, winner of the Intermediate class. Presentations were also made to Chris Stay (best Expert) and to the best Twin shock rider, Ross Haydon. Simon contacted me after the trial to say that Tony was touched by all the support and kind words from the riders - and to thank everyone involved. So very well done to all of you.
Now to the trial itself - Andy Scott-Jackson won the Intermediate class by the narrowest of margins, just a single mark separating him from returning rider James Stay. This being James’s first trial for twelve years or so – James must be pleased with that – an excellent effort. Stuart Gummer finished in third place. Meanwhile James’s Brother, Chris Stay was the clear winner in the Expert class, completing the trial for a total of just four dropped marks. Simon Newnham persevered, despite finding some of the sections a little difficult, to take second place and importantly seven Championship points.
The well contested Novice class was once again won by the improving Ben Brodie – a cushion of ten marks between him and second place rider Mike Taylor with John Coombes in third. Ben should be more than happy with this result as both Mike and John normally compete in the more difficult Inter class! Four Twin Shock riders today, headed up by the clear winner Ross Haydon on his Fantic machine. Ross finished the trial with the lowest score of the day, only three dropped marks – good effort Ross. Rory Stephens and Alan Gosden’s scores were tied on thirteen, Rory was awarded second place notching up more cleans. Stewart Freeman finished in fourth.
Phil Silvester took the win in the Adult Beginner’s from Steve Chase in second, sections three and five proved decisive. Young Harvey Grieve was the only rider in the Youth Novice’s, He never the less put in an excellent performance, his total of twenty-nine was better than most of the Adult’s on the same route! Harrison Crickmore should also be pleased with his win in the Youth Beginner’s dropping a miserly five marks. Alfie Haydon also finished with a very respectable total to land second spot. Returning rider, Matt Power took third with Josh Morris in fourth – very well done lads.
The next Club trial (Ted Phillips Cup) will be held on Sunday 27th November, the usual start time of twelve noon applies. Please keep an eye on the Club website: www.iowmcc.co.uk where the full details will be published, once finalised.
The Guy Fawkes Cup:
Godshill Park Farm
The tenth round of the 2016 Winter Championship was held on Sunday 23/10/16 at Godshill Park Farm, courtesy of Mr Angus Baird. The Club would like to thank Angus for welcoming us back to this superb venue and for the use of his ATV which was used to ferry the course setters up to the sections. Very many thanks also to Geoff and Mike Taylor, Simon Newnham, Malcolm Hawkins assisted by young Cameron who between them spent all day on Saturday clearing the land and setting the sections – excellent effort guys.
Seven Expert riders battled it out for the top honours. Returning rider and former Club Champion Chris Stay took the win with an impressive performance, losing just six marks. Chris finished with the lowest total of the day following an absence of two years or so – excellent ride Chris. Josh Stephens rode well to secure second spot from Will West who was third. Simon Newnham did very well to pick himself up, after a heavy landing on section eight (first lap) to complete the trial. Mark Coombes led the bunch in the Intermediate class with a cushion of twenty-five from Andy Scott-Jackson in second. Geoff Taylor should be very pleased with his third-place finish on today’s challenging course.
Ben Brodie must also be pleased with his effort, Ben won the Novice class from Paul Kent in second, just eight marks separated these two, section one proved to make all the difference. Third place was taken by Keith Jacobs with an excellent effort – very well done to all three riders. Alan Gosden was the only rider in the Twin Shock class, Alan struggled on section four, but kept going to earn his ten Championship points.
Steve Chase and Phil Silvester went head to head in the Adult Beginners. Section three was the deciding factor and saw Steve take the win with Phil in second – just ten marks separating the two. Two Youth riders today, Alfie Haydon and Josh Morris. Alfie emerged the clear winner but Josh is making good progress and gaining in confidence with each ride. Great effort from both lads, keep up the good work.
The Club has now published the Regs and Entry form for the 2017 Wight Two Day (Golden Anniversary) Trial on the Club website. 22nd and 23rd April 2017. We are expecting a bumper entry for this important milestone in the Clubs history, therefore places are limited, so get your paperwork off sooner rather than later!
The Club next meet on Sunday November 6th at Nodewell Farm, Totland for another special event – the Matt Russell Memorial Trial. I look forward to seeing you there?
The Frank Pragnell Cup:
Bembridge Down, courtesy of Mr Rob Taylor
The Frank Pragnell Cup was held on Sunday 2nd October at Bembridge Down, courtesy of Mr Rob Taylor. The Club are very grateful for the use of this great venue. Very many thanks also to the course setters, Geoff Taylor & Josh Stephens for eight fairly testing but fun sections and to Viki Taylor for her excellent camera work.
Weather conditions were perfect for trials, bright Autumn sunshine, not too warm and with no wind - all helped towards a really enjoyable afternoon. Rider numbers were lower than usual, despite the good weather. The Expert class was convincingly won by Rory Stephens. Rory finished with a total of thirty-six, twenty-one marks clear of second place finisher Simon Newnham. Sections one and six made all the difference. Mark Coombes stepped up from the Inters to have a go in the Experts today and put in a valiant effort to secure third place gaining his first ‘Expert’ Championship points.
Andy Scott-Jackson took the honours in the Intermediate group of riders ahead of Brothers Mike and Geoff Taylor who finished in second and third respectively. Andy finished nineteen marks clear to take the win but just two marks separated Mike and Geoff. This battle proved to be the closest contest of the day.
The well contested Novice class was won by Jon Croft with an excellent performance on what proved to be a tricky course. Championship leader Brian Brockwell was forced into second spot this time out, four marks adrift. Another excellent result today for James Craven who took third place with some really confident riding – very well done James. Meanwhile there was just one finisher in the Twin Shock class, Nick Symes notched up another class win with what turned out to be the lowest score of the day. Nick finished with a total of twenty-five.
We come back to Bembridge on April 22nd and 23rd next year for the annual Wight Two Day Trial. 2017’s event will be the Fiftieth Golden Anniversary Trial. The first Two day was held in 1967 and was won by British Expert Champion Sammy Miller. Sammy went on to take the title another nine times! We will be in a position, very soon, to publish the Regs and entry form along with all the details you need, for what promises to be a very special event. Please keep an eye on the Club website: www.iowmcc.co.uk where all the details will be available in around two weeks-time.
The Club next meet on Sunday October 23rd, 12 noon start. Once again please check the Club website nearer the time as the venue is still to be confirmed.

Shorwell Chalk Pit, courtesy of Mr Ralph Cook
The Isle of Wight motorcycle Club held the eighth round of the 2016 Winter Trials Championship on Sunday 18th September at Shorwell Chalk Pit. The Club would like to thank Mr Ralph Cook for welcoming us back at what is a great trials venue. Very many thanks to Course Setter Stewart Freeman. Stewart delivered eight really good sections and to Viki Taylor for her excellent camera skills.
The Club would like to extend a very warm welcome back to John Coombes – this being John’s first Club trial for just a few years! John gave a good account of himself, finishing third in the Novice class.
It was really good to see five Expert riders battling for the honours in what was a very close contest. Josh Stephens secured the win with a perfect ride from Championship leader, Will West. Will only lost one mark on section four. Jim West should be pleased with his third place finish with a total nine. Rory Stephens and Simon Newnham’s scores were tied on sixteen, Rory was awarded fourth place, notching up twenty-four cleans with Simon on twenty-two – very good effort by all five riders. The Intermediate class also proved to be a very close affair. Malcolm Hawkins, with an excellent effort, chalked up his first IOWmcc Inter win from Geoff Taylor in second, just four marks separating these two. Mike Taylor stayed focused to secure his third place finish.
The very well contested Novice class was won by Brian Brockwell, with an inspired ride, who finished on a total of just five. Brian’s win today increased his hold on the 2016 Novice Championship from rival Paul Kent in second. Paul was still in the mix going into the last lap where most of his points were lost, ending the trial on seventeen. Returning rider John Coombes took a brilliant third place, just a single mark behind Paul. Nick Symes also rode a perfect trial to take the win in the Twin Shock’s, joining Josh Stephens (Expert) finishing on zero! Calvin Wright claimed second place with a determined ride on his Ossa machine with its dodgy front brake!
Just one youth rider today – Alfie Haydon in the Youth Beginner - Small Wheel class. A very competitive score was posted none the less to earn his ten Championship points. This was the last trial for Alfie in the Small Wheels, following his Birthday earlier in the week, next time out he will be riding his ‘full size wheel’ Beta 80cc! Happy Birthday Alfie.
The Club next meet on Sunday 2nd October at Bembridge Down (courtesy of Mr Rob Taylor) for the next round. Once we have the permit the Reg’s will then be made available on the Club’s website.

Many thanks to Mark Coombes and Geoff Taylor who between them cleared the ground and set some creative sections. Viki Taylor was on hand to photograph the action for all to see – Thanks Viki.
The Club would like to welcome, new member, Kevin Smith and we look forward to seeing him at future events.
A perfect ride by relative newcomer Rob Howard in the Expert class who completed the trial without dropping a single mark. Excellent work Rob - not even the tricky section seven beat him! Simon Newnham and Mick Brown finished second and third respectively. The well contested Intermediate Class was won by course setter Mark Coombes with a loss of fifteen. Andy Scott-Jackson snatched second place from Malcolm Hawkins in third.
The Novice class produced another close finish by Championship contenders Brian Brockwell and Paul Kent. Brian took the spoils forcing Paul into second place. Paul was leading going into the final lap, sections seven and eight made all the difference. It was really good to see Alan Gosden competing in the Twin shocks which turned out to be the closest contest of the day. Alan took the win from Nick Symes in second, section seven proved pivotal – only one mark between them. Stewart Freeman picked up his five Championship points for his third place finish.
John Townsend took the win in the British bike class, John did very well to pilot his rather heavy Triumph machine around today’s tight and twisty sections. Steve Chase earned himself ten Championship points in the Adult Beginner’s. Kevin Smith entered the Sportsman class on this his first IOWmcc trial and despite finding some of the sections quite challenging, kept going to complete the trial. Three Youth Beginners today, the first two were separated by just a single mark! Harrison Crickmore just held on to take the win from Alfie Haydon in second. Josh Morris earned third place in his first ever ride at Sweetwater – very well done to all three riders.
The next round will be held on Sunday 18th September at 12 noon. The venue is still to be confirmed, please check the Club website nearer the time where the full details will be available. The Club now has a confirmed date for next year’s 50th golden anniversary Wight Two Day trial. 22nd and 23rd April 2017. Once again please check the website regularly for the full details - of what will be a rather special event.

The Club is very grateful to Kieron for welcoming us back to this excellent venue. Thanks also to course setter – Mark Coombes for six testing sections. Mark was assisted by Ross Haydon and Nick Symes. Very many thanks to Viki Taylor for her photographic skills, Viki captured all the action for us to look back on.
The Club would like to welcome three new members – Rob Howard, Dan Wise-Mellor and Aaron McGrath. We hope all three enjoyed the trial and we look forward to seeing them at future events.
Will West, once again, reigned supreme in the Expert class of riders. Will finished the trial for a miserly two marks. New member, Rob Howard, pushed Will hard to finish in second spot – just six marks between them. Simon Newnham finished third, sections three and four making all the difference. Five Intermediate riders today – headed up by course setter Mark Coombes. Mark also finished dropping just two. The improving Scott Milton took second place – only four marks separated these two, great effort by both riders. Mike Taylor should be really pleased with his third place finish in the Inters, returning from a (non- trials related) back injury earlier in the year – very well done Mike.
The very well contested Novice class was convincingly won by Brian Brockwell, Brian kept his head while others seemed to struggle. Second place was claimed by Steve Wood with a very composed performance. Ben Brodie took third spot, only two more marks adrift. Nick Symes won in the Twin Shock class dropping just fifteen marks from Stewart Freeman in second. John Townsend, the lone rider in the British Bike class, put in a solid ride to earn himself ten Championship points. Meanwhile, Phil Silvester took another win in the Adult Beginners, despite riding unopposed Phil finished with the fourth lowest score of the day.
Harvey Grieve headed up the Youth classes, taking the win in the Youth Novice class. Harrison Crickmore took the win in the Youth Beginner’s from Alfie Haydon in second and Josh Morris in third. Harrison (along with his parents) are very thankful to all - following the safe return of his stolen bike. For a 'nail biting' time Harrison was not sure he would even have a bike to ride! Whilst the bike was found, relatively undamaged, the Club is still appealing for any information on those responsible for the theft. Please get in touch if you think you can help.
The next Club trial (the GES Cup) will take place on Sunday 4th of September – when the 2016 Winter Championship resumes. The venue will be announced nearer the time on the Club’s website: www.iowmcc.co.uk.
