Boxing Day - Father and Son trial:
Shorwell Chalk Pit
The IOWmcc’s annual Boxing Day trial was held at Shorwell Chalk Pit, courtesy of Mr Ralph Cook. The Club would like to thank Ralph for welcoming us back to what is an excellent venue. On behalf of the Club I would like to thank John Gustar for setting eight brilliant but challenging sections. Thanks also to Sandra Power & Viki Taylor for the pics, Charlotte Percy & youngster, Ryan Power, for observing sections five and six and all those that helped clear up afterwards – great effort guys!
We would like to welcome back to trials riding Simon Watmough, Mark Coombes, Emma Percy, John Coombes, Ellie Attrill, Mike Attrill and Martin Wallis. All returning after several years out. We hope you all had a great time and look forward to seeing you all back again soon.
The Father and Son competition was fought out by no less than seven pairings! Congratulations to what proved to be the clear winners, Tony and Tom Read, they finished on a combined total of just thirty six marks. Stewart and Will West had to settle for second spot today with Jono and Ben Read in third. The fancy dress awards went to Jacob Furnell, best youth, who came dressed as a Gorilla - well done Jacob and Wayne Brodie, best Adult, dressed as some sort of elf like looking thing, apparently. Now if that doesn’t make you smile - then nothing will!
The (well contested) Expert class was won by the 2015 Club Champion, Will West. Will had to dig in deep to stay ahead of brother, Jim West in second and Nick Read in third. Ben Read took the honours in the Inters, Ben despite being the only rider in the Intermediate class, still managed to post a really competitive score. Simon Watmough’s return to trials was rewarded by taking the Clubman class from Shaun Harris in second place – good effort by both riders.
Things were very close in the popular Novice class of riders. Twelve competitors fought it out on today’s testing course. It was Mark Coombes who eventually emerged as the winner from Tom Read in second. Tony Read was forced to settle for third spot – just six points separated these three. Tony and Tom’s combined score however saw them win the Father and Son competition. Ross Haydon narrowly beat Nick Symes to take the Twinshock class – only one point between them. Ross dropping five marks and Nick on six – the two lowest scores of the day! Alan Gosden put in a determined effort to finish in third with a total of just sixteen marks.
The Adult Beginner class (the closest battle of the day) was headed up by returning rider, Ellie Attrill, and Ben Wolfe. Both riders ending the day tied with just eight marks lost. It was Ellie who took the win with twenty five cleans to Ben’s twenty four – good effort though by both riders. Mike Attrill finished in third. Mike returned to trials today following a break for major surgery to sort out a serious back injury – brilliant effort Mike, great to see you fit and well - and back riding with us once again.
Meanwhile Matt Power took the win in the Youth Beginner class – well done Matt. Young Alfie Haydon stepped up a class today and tackled the D route on his little TY80 machine, to finish in second place – excellent effort by both riders.
The 2016 Championship kicks off on Sunday 03/01/16 at Sweetwater Brook, Calbourne, courtesy of Trevor Strickland. The usual start time of 12 noon applies. I look forward to seeing you all then. Finally, on behalf of the Committee, I would like to wish all the land owners, members, riders, supporters, associates and their families all the very best for 2016.
2015 Winter Series Championship - Final Standings:
Isle of Wight
Congratulations to all of this year's award winners.
The Duver Cup:
Haslett Farm, courtesy of Mr Glen Draper
The final round of the 2015 Championship, The Duver Cup, took place at Haslett Farm, Shorwell, courtesy of Mr Glen Draper. The Club would like to thank Glen for welcoming us back once again. Thanks also to course setter Calvin Wright who was assisted by Jos Wright and Joe Ender – between them they presented us with eight really good sections. Thanks also to Mark Coombes who observed section four and to all those that helped clean up at the end.
The Club would like to welcome two new members Joe Ender and Reggie Price. Reggie (under Dad’s supervision) treated today as mainly a practise session. Reggie is just four years old. Joe Ender, even before he was officially a member put himself out to help Calvin set today’s sections – well done to both of them.
Will West once again stamped his authority in the Expert class, finishing on a miserly total of two, from Nick Read (who only lost four) with Jim West in third, only three more marks adrift – great riding by all three riders. The Intermediate class was convincingly won by Ben Read with Michael Brown in second and Shaun Harris in third. Mark Gray took the win in the Clubman class from friendly rivals Andy Scott Jackson and Stuart Gummer who finished second and third respectively.
The Novice class was taken by relative newcomer Andy Steele, losing just nine marks – good effort Andy. Brian Brockwell finished in second spot with Luke Bowen Clarke in third. In the Twinshock class, despite being dumped over the handlebars on section eight, it was Nick Symes who took the honours from Stewart Freeman finishing in second. Ben Wolf (Adult beginners) did well to stay ahead of Dan Parkman – just nine marks separated these two – great going guys.
The Youth classes were headed up by Jos Wright (Youth Expert) dropping just nineteen marks. Brendon Penn also rode well – but his punch card is still missing – his scores will be updated just as soon as we’ve found it! Harvey Grieve was the lone rider in the Youth Novice class and had to dig in deep to earn his ten Championship points.
New member, Joe Ender, as well as helping to set the course - went on to win the Youth Beginner class! Good stuff. Jacob Furnell had to settle for second place today after a lengthy absence. Things were pretty close between Harrison Crickmore and Alfie Haydon in the E class – Harrison just managing to stay ahead of Alfie to take the win.
The next trial is the ‘Father and Son’ Boxing day Cup, 26/12/15. Shorwell Chalk Pit, as usual, is the venue. Calvin Wright will once again be your course setter. I look forward to seeing you all there. Full details will be available from the Club website very soon.
Matt Russell Memorial Cup:
Nodewell Farm
The Matt Russell Memorial trial was held at Nodewell Farm, Totland, courtesy of the Morgan Family, the Club would like to thank them for welcoming us back for this special trial.
Matt was a popular and a well-liked member of the Club. He was an accomplished Intermediate class rider who tragically and suddenly lost his life at the age of just twenty nine. His close friends, Ross Haydon and Simon Morgan were today’s course setters, assisted by young Alfie Haydon. Matt’s Dad, Tony Russell presented the ‘Matt Russell Cup’ to Nick Read, winner of the Intermediate class. Presentations were also made to Will West (best Expert) and Twinshock riders Nick Symes and Calvin Wright.
A very big thank you to the course setters – Ross Haydon, Simon Morgan and Alfie for providing us with eight excellent and technical sections. Thanks also to Viki Taylor for braving the cold and capturing some great images and Mark Coombes for observing section one. On behalf of the Club I would like to thank everyone that turned out to support this trial and to all the riders for sticking to the marked route through the field.
The Club would like to welcome four new members – Dan Parkman, Andy Steele, Michael Brown and Luke Bowen Clarke. We hope you all had a good trial and we look forward to seeing you at future events.
The Expert class was convincingly won by Will West who finished with the lowest total of just seven marks. Brother Jim took second on twenty three. The Inter class was won by Nick Read who was the clear winner from Michael Brown in second and Shaun Harris in third. Ross Haydon headed up the Clubman class from rivals Mark Gray and Stuart Gummer finishing in second and third respectively.
Father and son duo Tony and Tom Read fought it out in the well contested Novice class – It was son Tom who earned the win from dad Tony in second. Brian Brockwell, despite finishing third today, definitely sealed the Novice Championship – well done Brian. Things were very close in the Twinshock’s With Nick Symes and Calvin Wright, both riders finishing on a score of nineteen. It was Nick who took top spot with twenty six cleans to Calvin’s twenty one – good effort by both riders.
The competition was also close in the Adult Beginner class, just seven marks separated the first three! Dan Parkman (in his first trial) took the win with Phil Silvester in second and Ben Wolf in third. Jos Wright also sealed the 2015 Youth Expert title with his win today – great stuff Jos. Harvey Grieve also rode really well to take the win in the Youth Novice class – well done Harvey. The youngest riders in the Club (E class) fought it out on today’s tricky course – It was Harrison Crickmore who just pipped Alfie Haydon for first place, by just three marks – good effort by both riders. The next trial will be held at Haslett Sandpit on Dec 6th, courtesy of Mr Glen Draper. The usual start time of 12 noon. I look forward to seeing you all then.
The Guy Fawkes Cup :
Knighton Sand Pit
The Guy Fawkes Cup was held earlier today at Knighton Sand Pit, by kind permission of Mr Roger Morgan. The Club would like to thank Roger for inviting us back to what is a great venue. A very big thank you also to the course setters Geoff Taylor, Stuart Gummer, Mark Gray, John Coombes, James Craven & Brian Brockwell – cracking sections guys, good effort.
Will West convincingly won the expert class from Simon Newnham & brother Jim (who finished 2nd & 3rd respectively). Will put in a stunning ride, not dropping a single mark! Things were much closer between Simon and Jim who both finished on the same total – it was Simon that clinched second spot scoring 28 cleans from Jim with 27. Great effort by all three riders. The Intermediate class was taken by Nick Read, the clear winner from John Death (2nd) and Geoff Taylor in third. This was Nick’s first time out this year!
In the clubman class it was Mark Gray who took the spoils, some way ahead of fellow course setter Stuart Gummer with Shaun Harris in third. Once again there was a tie for the minor places – Stuart with 19 cleans & Shaun with 15. Brian Brockwell has all but sealed the novice class Championship with a determined effort. Rival Paul Kent having to settle for second place. Relative newcomer James Craven finished in third place – this being James’s first attempt at the harder route – good effort. Nick Symes found himself alone in the twinshock class but never the less put in another solid performance for his ten Championship points.
Phil Silvester continues his recent good form to win the adult beginner class from Jon Diffey. The Club would like to welcome Jon who was taking part in his first trial – We look forward to seeing him at future events. Wayne Brodie managed to win the sportsman class from Ray Power in second & John Townsend in third. However in an unofficial vote (following photographic evidence) it was Ray that took the points for artistic impression - with his impressive leap of faith on section seven – Brilliant effort mate!
The Youth classes were headed up with Harvey Grieve. Harvey moved up a class today competing in the youth novice class with an inspired performance. Harvey’s score on the ‘C’ route was better than most of the adult riders! Matt Power took the youth beginner class – well done Matt. Meanwhile Harrison Crickmore, despite losing part of his exhaust system, ‘dug in’ to take the win in the E class from Alfie Haydon – good effort by both riders though.
The next Club trial will be held at Nodewell Farm, Totland, courtesy of the Morgan Family. The Matt Russell Memorial Cup. November 22nd at 12 noon - Ross Haydon is your course setter. I look forward to a bumper entry for this particular trial! The next time the Club get together however is for the AGM. Once again we are hoping for a good turnout, after all it’s your Club, come along if you can. 11th November at the Camphill Officers Club, Newport at 8pm.
The Ted Phillips Cup :
Godshill Park Farm, courtesy of Angus Baird.
The Ted Phillips Cup was held at Godshill Park Farm courtesy of Angus Baird. The Club would like to thank Angus for welcoming us back to this brilliant venue. On behalf of everyone I would also like to thank today’s course setters: Nick Symes, Stewart Freeman, Brian Brockwell and Andy Scott-Jackson (main routes) Also to Phil Silvester, Harvey Grieve & Ross Haydon for the beginner routes.
The Club would like to welcome back to trialling Jim West, Shaun Harris and John Death. Jim went head to head with Brother Will in the Expert class. Jim pushed quite hard and for a while found himself in front. However it was ‘match fit’ Will that took the honours, sections seven & eight proving to make all the difference.
Meanwhile Shaun Harris returned to winning ways with some real solid riding to take the Clubman class from John Death in second and Mark ‘kickstart’ Gray in third. Only four marks separated these three – good effort by each of them.
Things are really hotting up in the Novice class between Paul Kent & Brian Brockwell. It was Paul that took the win today (from Brian) with an excellent performance, on today’s tricky course. Brian however is leading the Championship by five points from Paul with just three rounds to go – the Championship may well be decided at the final round!
The Twinshock class was convincingly taken by Nick Symes with rival Stewart Freeman in second. Nick did however loose more than just a few marks after emerging from the difficult section seven – with only half a rear mudguard and just to make matters worse he also managed to destroy a rather expensive pair of designer sunglasses - good effort Nick!
Phil Silvester took another ten Championship points in the Adult Beginners with a confident ride. Harvey Grieve sealed the Championship win (Youth Beginner class) today with three rounds to spare! Harvey is looking forward to stepping up to the Youth Novice class for the remaining rounds in preparation for next year – good effort Harvey, keep it up. Alfie Haydon can sleep well tonight after another really good score taking the win in the Youth Small Wheel class. Dad Ross will probably also sleep well after running around behind Alfie all afternoon!
The next Club Trial is only a week away – Sunday 1st November at 12 noon. We are awaiting confirmation for the venue, check the website or our Facebook page – I will update them once I have the details. Please don’t forget that the Club AGM will be held on Wednesday 11th of November – 8pm at Camphill Officers Club. I am hoping for a good turnout, after all it’s your chance to have your say on how you would like the Club to be run – It’s your Club, the membership & important that all members benefit from it. I’m also looking forward to a few ‘social’ pints at the bar afterwards!
Frank Pragnell Cup:
Bembridge Down
Bembridge Down hosted the eighth round of the IOWmcc’s winter Championship - the Frank Pragnell Cup. The Club would like to thank Rob and John Taylor for the use of this brilliant venue. The course setters Andy Scot-Jackson and Stuart Gummer set a blinding trial – now we always appreciate people giving up their time to set the sections but today’s course came straight out of the top drawer – well done guys. Thanks also to Ross Haydon and Richard Crickmore for the E route and all those that helped clear up afterwards.
Will West’s performance probably also came out of that same ‘top drawer’ Will finished the trial dropping a miserly two marks and despite riding unopposed in the Expert class, it would be difficult to imagine anyone bettering his score. Nick Symes went round for a loss of just three marks to take the Twinshock class – good effort by both riders.
Rory Stephens took the Intermediate Class convincingly from Mike Taylor in second and brother Geoff in third. This was Rory’s first time out since the Wight Two Day trial back in April. Course setters Stuart Gummer and Andy Scott-Jackson fought it out in the Clubman class – It was Stuart who cruised to another ten Championship points.
The Novice class was won by the improving Brian Brockwell with another solid performance - from Paul Kent, although Paul rode most of the trial with only his front brake – not ideal considering the steep climbs that Bembridge always presents us with! Jamie Mather in his first outing this year finished in a creditable third place.
Phil Silvester is definitely on a roll taking another win in the Adult Beginner’s – his Sherco is certainly out performing his dodgy old Beta! Harvey Grieve rode really well to take the Youth Beginner class win. The E route riders, Alfie Haydon and Harrison Crickmore fought it out over seven sections (section seven proving to be too difficult to include an E route) In the closest contest of the day it was Alfie who just did enough, by one mark, to take the win.
The next Club trial is scheduled for Sunday 25th October at Nodewell Farm, Totland, the Matt Russell Memorial trial. Your course setter for this event is, as always, Ross Haydon. I hope this special event will be well supported. I look forward to seeing a good turnout!
The Medina Cup:
Shorwell Chalk Pit, courtesy of Ralph Cook.
Shorwell Chalk Pit was the venue for the eighth round of the 2015 Winter Championship, the Medina Cup. The Club would like to thank Ralph Cook who kindly allowed us to use this great piece of land.... On behalf of everyone I would also like to thank Calvin Wright, who stepped in at short notice to provide us with six really good and clever sections.
The turnout was once again disappointing, but for those that made the effort, a great afternoon’s trialling followed.
Will West had to be on his toes today with Peter Carr also competing in the Expert class – Will, as steady as ever, stamped his authority with another smooth and confident performance to convincingly take the win from Peter.... Brothers Mike and Geoff Taylor fought it out in the Intermediate class, it was Mike who just finished ahead of Geoff, just three marks separated them! Geoff did have a golden opportunity to take the win but became confused on section five and missed the flags which resulted with the maximum five penalty marks being awarded. Andy Scott Jackson took the win in the Clubman class with an impressive performance to earn another ten Championship points.
Paul Kent was the sole rider in the Novice class but still rode really well to lose only seventeen marks. Nick Symes and course setter Calvin Wright had a real battle in the Twinshocks, after a ‘school boy’ error on section three, when Nick Symes followed the wrong route to incur the maximum five penalty marks and left Calvin leading for most of the trial. The last lap proved decisive with a determined effort from Nick who just about sneaked into the top spot.... Phil Sylvester should be really pleased with his latest bike. Phil has been dogged with reliability issues up to now but today took the Adult Beginners and bagged himself ten Championship points.... Wayne Brodie took the win in the Sportsman class finishing with a loss of seven marks!
Jos Wright rode brilliantly (with only his front brake to rely on) and dropped just fourteen marks in the Youth Expert class – good effort Jos.... Harvey Grieve, at only his second attempt in the Youth Novice class, earned himself another win – keep up the good work.... Harrison Crickmore took the Youth E class with another solid performance. Harrison had a try at some of the harder routes and should be really pleased with his scores.
The next round (the Frank Pragnell Cup) will take place on Sunday 27/09/15. The venue is still yet to be confirmed – please check the Club website nearer the time – it will be updated once I have confirmation.
GES Cup:
Godshill Park Farm, courtesy of Angus Baird
Today saw the re-start of the 2015 Winter Championship with the GES Cup held at Godshill Park Farm. The Club would like to thank Angus Baird for the use of this excellent venue. Angus has invited us back so we may well return here soon. A big thank you should also go to today’s course setters – Nick Symes, Andy Ryall & Stewart Freeman who between them, in the driving rain, presented us with eight brilliant sections. The turnout was disappointing, probably due to the deluge of rain earlier in the morning, however the rain stopped and conditions were just right for a great afternoon’s trialling.
It was young Alfie Haydon (Youth Small Wheel) who completed the trial with the lowest total, with another good and confident ride – well done Alfie. Jos Wright also put in a solid performance to take the points in the Youth Expert class on today’s tricky course. Harvey Grieve should also be pleased with his score – Harvey moved up a class today riding the Youth Novice route and finished ahead of most of the Adults riding the C route – great effort Harvey.
Geoff Taylor took the win in the Clubman class, despite a manoeuvre better associated with a ballet dancer, Geoff performed a pirouette on his back wheel on the steep part of section two and managed to stay on his bike - great marks for showmanship but the maximum five points were awarded for missing the flags!
Things were very close, once again, between Brian Brockwell and Paul Kent. This time it was Brian that took the win in the Novice class, finishing just two marks ahead of Paul. Nick Symes took a convincing win in the Twinshocks with fellow course setter Stewart Freeman in second. The Sportsman class was also close. Andy Ryall’s superior riding on sections three and seven saw him finish just ahead of Wayne Brodie – just six marks between these two.
The next Club trial will be held on Sunday 13th September, probably at Bembridge Down – please check the website nearer the time as we have yet to have this confirmed.
