2022 Wight Two Day - Saturday Results:

Knighton

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

Report for Saturday, courtesy of Alfie Haydon.

The 54th Wight Two-Day trial took place on the 3rd and 4th of September 2022, where 150 riders came over to the island to ride some tricky sections which caused some laughs and some drama. The Trials entry included many excellent riders including 2 adult riders who are currently competing in the British championship and 5 youth riders who have competed at the first 4 rounds of the British Youth championship this year. We would like to thank the Morgan family, owners of knighton sand pit for allowing us to ride at such an amazing place.

The headline which stood out the most was Chris Stay (TRRS) who has won multiple youth British championships and the Expert class in the adult British championship (2019) had an unfortunate slip which resulted in an early 5 for coming off his bike. This left George Gosden (Beta UK) to take the advantage on the Saturday going around clean losing nothing all day to take the win. Thomas Moss lost out on a tie break to Chris which is a sensational result for Thomas to be tied with Chris though losing second due to having 2 fewer cleans than Chris.

Another headline was the unfortunate accident of Gary Tarrant who dislocated his knee, resulting in him being unable to compete on both days. We all wish a speedy recovery to Gary and hope we haven't scared him away from the island and that he will return next year. In the Clubman/Expert class that ride half of the A route and half of the B route was won confidently by 10 times British Champion Steve Saunders, who only lost 2 marks all day, an extremely low score which is to be expected of a rider of his calibre. Steve lost a dab on section 7 and section 14 where his front wheel sunk into a hole on the other side of a very large tree stump he had just ridden up perfectly. Nick Hosford managed to claim second with a 3-mark buffer to Martin Carter which was decided on the tricky sections 7 and 9 where Martin lost out the most to Nick.

The Clubman class was headed up by Paul Doney who took the win on 7 with a slim but decisive 1 mark margin over island legend Rory Stephens. Rory lost an uncharacteristic dab on section 3 which most riders cleaned every lap. He did ride better on section 11 cleaning it every lap whereas Paul lost 2 over the 3 attempts at the section, but Paul rode better on section 13 where he made 2 marks up on Rory to take the win. Ben Owen came in 3rd on 9 losing marks in different places to the top 3 cleaning every section via 1 that the top 2 lost marks on yet struggled on sections 2,6,12,14 which inevitably cost him from finishing a lot higher. Islander, Adam Morgan came in 4th on 10, losing marks where everyone else did. In a highly competitive class, the top 4 were separated by only 4 marks.

In the Youth B class, who ride the same course as the adult clubman riders, was won confidently by Alfie Haydon who blew all of his competition away with a stunning result of only 3 dropped marks. This means Alfie beat all the adults as well who rode his course. Alfie will not be completely satisfied with this result though as the marks he lost were due to the rider making stupid mistakes and even 1 mark was lost as he jumped too high out of a section and lost his balance on landing. That'll teach him or did it? Kai Fisher had a good result beating Taylor Burnell to 2nd place dropping 42 marks over the long 3 laps of 15 sections. Taylor mainly loosing out on sections 9 and 11 where Kai managed to get a considerable advantage over him. Taylor's result was slightly hurt by his bike breaking down on the first lap which left him with some marks he wouldn't have wanted to lose. But there was Sunday to come for Taylor and Kai to prove who was better with no breakdowns to change the results. In the Veteran’s class, riding the C route, Anthony Chalk managed to take the win with an outstanding ride recording only 1 mark dropped all day which was the second lowest score out of the trial. Gary White came in second losing 3 dabs on the hard sections, unlike Anthony who lost a slack dab on an easy section, struggled with Knighton's soft sand yet managed to claim 2nd place. Ian Pape will be extremely happy with his ride yet extremely disappointed he rode all sections clean except section 14 where he lost a shock 5 which cost him the win inevitably. Our first and 1 of 2 female winners was Holly Boys-Guest who took a confident win over Scott Owen in the sportsman class with a 4-mark margin. The lead swinging back and forth between these two throughout the day with Holly emerging the winner. Scott won a tie break with Leigh Norris with a single clean being the difference. This was yet another competitive class with 2nd to 6th all separated by one mark between each.

In the twin shock class, Geoff Muston took a confident win in the soft sand and tight technical sections of the sand pit losing only a single mark on section 14. Just to make something clear with these low scores it is not easy to have a good trial at a low-scoring trial than it is at a high-scoring trial. The concentration and limiting stupid mistakes is incredibly hard so to go round for under 5 is a result to be applauded. Anthony Talbot came in second losing 3 marks all day losing 2 extra dabs compared to Geoff on sections 5 and 7. Douglas Johnson came in third, slightly adrift of the front 2 with a decent margin to 4th place. Only 1 rider competed in the pre-65 class where Joseph Butcher took the win piloting his big and heavy classic bike through the sections which were predominantly designed for the advancements of modern bikes.

Out of the 14 classes, only 3 were won by island riders and Jason Elford was one of them. Jason rode a sensational trial winning by a huge margin and losing only 9 marks. Nick Tait took second place from Christopher Burnell in which this battle was fought tirelessly throughout the day, ending with Nick taking the win by a slim but decisive 1-mark margin with Nick losing 34 and Christopher on 35. Youth C had the most competitors out of all the youth classes where David James lost 5 marks meaning he beat all the adults who rode the same route as him, showing the extent of how good a result this was for him. Adam Kilby came in second having to fight for second from Jake Smith, with sections 6 and 7, being the most pivotal section in deciding who took the second place. Katie Butcher took the win from Riley Baker in youth D class showing her age and the performance difference between the 2 bikes. Katie was riding a 125 cc machine and 10-year-old Riley on a Medium wheeled 80cc machine. Nonetheless, both riders had brilliant rides and they should be proud of themselves. Riley competing in his first two-day trial coped really well with the three long laps of 15 sections on his smaller machine.

Roud, Duxmore & Haslett

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

The final standings from this year's Pat Death Summer Series Trials Championships. Please be sure to read & understand the award winning criterea at the top of page 1.

Congratulations to all the Award winners.

If you think an error has been made - please get in touch (asap) so the relevant checks can take place.

This marks the end of an era for me! - The last Summer Series Championship I will be overseeing. I have decided not to stand for Competition Recorder at November's AGM. After 9 years of full on Club stuff, I have decided it's time to take a break.

Obviously a replacement needs to be found - the Club can't run competitive trials without results.

If you think you may be interested or want more of an insight of what's involved then please contact me, or any other Committee Member. We are more than happy to provide more information.

A permanent replacement can't simply be appointed, this can only be done at the Club's Annual General Meeting.

2022 Nigel Crouch Memorial Trial - The BigHobbler:

Shorwell Chalk Pit

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

The Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club held a very special trial in memory of Nigel Crouch on Sunday 31st July. Nigel sadly passed away in January 2018. He served on the Club’s Committee for over forty years holding the post of Hon Treasurer for most of those. He was a very popular character who always saw the best in everyone, an inspiration to all, especially the younger and less experienced riders – Nigel is sorely missed but very fondly remembered. Today’s trial was billed as ‘fun trial’ with the emphasis being on participation & in remembrance of the big man.

The trial was held at Shorwell Chalk Pit courtesy of Ralph Cook. The Club would like to thank Ralph for his superb hospitality. The day was designed to be a relaxed fun trial, that’s to say there were no championship points on offer. Participants were ‘riding for fun’ and this shouldn’t be confused with riding an easy trial! Many thanks to Stewart Freeman who took the lead plotting the sections – there were 6 sections, 3 on the easier side whilst the other 3 were designed to test the rider’s trials skills. Our thanks to Stewart Freeman, Kate Baker, Deborah Payne, Alfie Haydon, Adrian Daish and Dave Rose – the 6 Observers who helped the trial to move along nicely.

Although the focus was not on competition, it wouldn’t be a trial without a set of results. There are a couple of superb Awards that have been sponsored by two of Nigel’s closest friends; Dave Rose and Joe Henderson. A stunning Silver-Plated Cup called the NMC Memorial Trophy from Dave and something a bit different all the way from Australia, Joe Henderson’s ‘True Spirit’ Award.

As mentioned earlier, Nigel was very well known for inspiring and encouraging younger club members and that legacy clearly continues to have an influence.

I have great pleasure in announcing that ‘The Nigel Mason Crouch Memorial Trophy’ has been awarded to 9-year-old, Blake Buggy. It’s fair to say Blake did struggle at first on his all-electric Oset machine, particularly on the steeper banked sections in the woods. But with some enthusiastic and confidence building encouragement - he not only finished the trial, he went on to win his class. Superb effort Blake!

This year ‘The True Spirit Award’ goes to a young man who didn’t even ride the trial; Alfie Haydon. Normally Alfie would have entered the trial accompanied by his dad & mentor Ross. However, as some of you may know, Ross has recently suffered from a serious illness which is preventing them both from riding. Despite this, Alfie cycled out from Newport and picked up an Observer board to observe section 4. Then he helped clear up before cycling back home again – True Spirit in anyone’s book!

I am relieved to say that Ross is back at home continuing what is clearly going to be a slow but hopefully a full recovery. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone at The IOWMCC to wish Ross and the family all the very best during this difficult time.

Excellent effort IOWMCC! – It’s events like this that make all the effort worthwhile.

The Spring Cup:

Godshill Park Farm

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

Report by Alfie Haydon.

For the last round of the winter series before the summer break the IOWMCC met at Godshill Park Farm for the spring Cup trial, to see who would take the lead in their classes going into the summer break.

We would like to thank Mr. Angus Baird for the use of this huge venue and the Observers who put themselves out to help the trial run smoothly: Adrian Daish, Steve Kent, Richard Crickmore, Mike Morris and an extra big thank you to Wayne Brodie for doing all the hard work behind the scenes for us to be able to enjoy riding our bikes.

Expert rider Tom Richards led the field yet again to record six wins on the trot - although he didn’t manage to clean all the sections, he was by far the better rider on the very difficult section seven. Ross Haydon was the only expert rider to clean section four doing so twice and Jos Wright was the only expert rider to clean section eight, all three riders enjoying the longer and more varied sections.

On the 'B' route, the riders are separated into 3 categories depending on their age. This week it was Alfie Haydon in the Youth Experts who posted the best score on the 'B' route having a perfect ride! By not dropping a single mark, all trial, to win his class and to secure himself as best 'B' route rider on the day. Freddie Death on his first outing in the Youth Experts managed to take a comfortable second place, with a score of 9, from rival Harrison Crickmore who was on 23. A great result for Freddie, showing what he can do when he puts his mind to it.

In the Intermediates, Daryl Biles took the win with a score of 2. The 2 marks he lost were on section 7 which was the deciding section for most people as you either had it or you didn’t. The legendary Mark Coombes was back in action after a few years out of the sport and hit the ground running, coming in third, with a very respectable score of 6 for his first ride back.

The final class who ride the 'B' route were the over 50's. Andy Scott-Jackson came out on top finishing on 15 snatching the win from yet another returning rider, Simon Newnham who was on 19, John Coombes claimed third place after a tumble on section 7. He still managed to finish on 24.

In the Clubman class only one rider in action, Adam Brodie, who rode confidently coping with all the obstacles competently. In the Open C’s it was Geoff Taylor who took the win - going around for an impressive clean rideand beating Nick Symes to first place. Alan Gosden was tied for second with Nick but he lost the tie break by losing a mark sooner than Nick. This new class has been a great success creating new rivalries. In the Novice's James Rogers yet again took the win going round for a perfect score of zero to be top in his class. Paul Kent on the electric bike came in second with one of his best rides this year, dropping a total of 8, snatching second place by only 1 mark - leaving third for Tristan Osborne on 9.

In the Youth Novices Ollie Elford was victorious dropping only 8 marks ,10 less than his nearest competitor; Kaiden Cutts. Kaiden managed to be more consistent than Riley True (3rd) which gave him the edge.

The Adult Beginners only had one rider this week with Steven Jacobs going round for 25. In the Youth Beginners the 2 youths riding 125cc machines took first and second with Connor Shaw winning with a score 5 showing how much he has improved. It was clear to see second place, Leo Death, has improved a ton recently only dropping 25 marks and taking everything in his stride. In third was young Riley Baker riding an 80cc small wheeled machine which made this long distance trial even more of a trek. This meant even more of a trial for the young lad to enjoy and gain more valuable experience.

The Medina Cup:

Apes Down

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

Report by Alfie Haydon.

Club chairman Andy Ryall used all of his experience to plot out a challenging course which proved to be spot on - at a fantastic venue courtesy of Mrs Jane Ball. With helpers Richard and Harrison Crickmore; The team were able to set out a longer lap which was enjoyed by all the riders at the Medina Cup trial. The riders would also like to thank the observers, who for once had some decent weather to put themselves out for the rest of us.

In the experts, Tom Richards extended his winning run and his lead at the front of the championship with some outstanding rides throughout the trial, even having to battle with his front brake jamming on. Ross Haydon and Jos wright had some great cleans and both incurred three fives but again Ross managed to edge out a six mark advantage by the end of the day. Josh Morris suffered an early tumble which did not help his confidence but he battled on to the finish to round out the experts.

The intermediates, a very competitive class, was headed up by Daryl Biles this week getting used to a new machine. He finished 4 marks in front of Ben Read with Johnathon Death not far behind. Any one of the riders in this class could claim the win on his day. Some very close results in the over 50 class today - John Coombes came out on top, the technical sections suiting his tidy riding skills. Stuart Gummer was next with Andy Scott Jackson having to settle for third this week.

Also riding the B route were four youth experts - today Alfie Haydon had a great first lap which set him up for a four lap total of just 13 marks while Alfie Gaskin returned to snatch second place from Harrison crickmore. Freddie Death gaining valuable experienceince in his first outing in this class.

Only one rider was in the clubman class today; Jason Elford went round for a respectable score of 56 earning himself 10 championship points.

A new class had its maiden battles, the Open C, which Incorporates all riders who attempt to clean the C route. Alan Gosden managed to beat the master, Nick Symes, with an excellent ride - the second time this year he has managed to beat one of the best. Geoff Taylor just lost out on the tie break for second with dropping a mark sooner than Nick Symes. Rob Payne and Dave Elford made the step up to the C route with Rob putting in a great effort to make the step up after such little time since starting the sport. Dave Elford struggled to get through the sections as he suffered mechanical issues which hindered him causing him to drop marks yet he still completed the trial to finish on reasonable score, under the circumstances.

Only one rider was in the twin shock class; Keith Thomas made his return to the sport with a very respectable score of 33. In the novices, James Rogers was clear of everyone by at least 20 marks, only losing marks on 3 sections on the day. Paul Kent managed to get the better of Ben Ashcroft in a tie break with both of them ending on 24. Paul kept his feet up in three more sections than Ben. Mike True was next then Luke Jacobs won the tie with most ones over Tristan Osborne.

Also with only 1 rider was the adult beginners where Steve Jacobs put in a good effort to finish on 54 at a new venue for him. In the youth novices, Ollie Elford has started to find his form after a shakey start to the championship, he won again pushing Kaidan Cutts down to 2nd position. Youth Easy saw Riley Baker take the win from Blake Buggy. His improvement on the bike is plain to see at progressive trials. His recent results have been edging closesr to competitor Riley Baker. The Club will meet next for the annual Awards evening this coming Saturday a celebration of another year's successful trials for all.
