Shorwell Chalk Pit

Report of the Annual Boxing Day Father and Son Cup Trial.

Weak but welcome wintery sunshine greeted the 33 entrants for the Annual Boxing Day Father and Son Cup Trial at Shorwell chalk pit, courtesy of land owner Ralph Cook.

Four laps of eight sections expertly plotted by Alan and George Gosden, Chris Stay, Josh Stephens, Rob and Riley Baker.

There can't be many clubs that can boast three British Champions signed on to ride at the same event; well, Monday saw the three musketeers line up in the expert class to treat the sizeable crowd to a display of ridiculously good riding.

Chris Stay took the expert class win on a miserly 2 marks lost, with George Gosden second on 5 marks and Becky Cook finishing on 23.

In the intermediate class the win was taken by young Daryl Biles, who put in some steady riding in the sticky conditions. Sonny Gaskin followed Biles home taking second place posting a good score of 29. One mark ahead of the fast improving AJ Shaw.

The open B class was headed home by a determined Jason Elford on 47 marks, who claimed family bragging rights over his brother Joe who finished third on 56 marks lost. Second place was taken by Tom Richards who opted to ride his fathers 40 year old SWM machine.

The open C class was won by Alan Gosden on 4 marks with Paul Baldwin on 13 marks lost and Scott Milton scooted round for 18 marks lost; Scott being under strict instructions that lunch would be served at 1.30 pm at mothers! He really had his work cut out to be in Carisbrooke for the allotted time.

The over 50 class was won by Andy Scott-Jackson, now fully recovered from his broken ribs sustained at this years Two Day Trial back in September. Only two marks seperated him and 2nd place rider Stuart Gummer, who was using the trial as a fitness workout for his up coming attempt at this years gruelling Paris-Daker rally. Phil Chase brought up the rear in third with 66 marks lost.

Mike True took first place in the Novice Class which is often closely contested, posting a great score of 16. The old timer looks set to push for the novice championship in 2023. Second spot was claimed by the ever improving Sam Jurich with 28 marks, whilst third place on this occasion belonged to Luke Jacobs with 66 marks.

Steve Jacobs had oppostion in the Adult Easy Class from new club members Mike Denness and Mark Beale who tackled the eight sections with confidence: Mike taking second on 106 marks and Mark finishing third with 146.

In the Sportsmans 50/50 Class C and B route Steve Chase had a convincing win on 44 marks with the always smiling Derek Farndell returning from a long injury lay off in second with 87 marks.

Kev Smith rode unopposed on the Sportsman D route enjoying himself with a steady ride finishing with 51 marks lost.

On the Youth B and C 50 /50 course Olly Elford is making encouraging progress and seems to be riding better on every outing, he's bound to be rewarded with a new bike any time soon ......eh Dad? Olly finished on 49 marks.

In the Youth Novice Class Riley True with 25 marks lost, headed home young master Shaw on 31 marks. Both of these guys had good rides in such sticky conditions.

The Youth Easy Class was won by Riley Baker on his new Beta machine from young Blake Buggy who also put in another confident ride on his electric Oset machine, with just 82 marks lost.

A very good turnout saw 7 teams compete in The Father and Son class. The top three places were first Alan and George Gosden; second Sam Jurich and Riley True; third Jason and Olly Elford.

The Boxing Day fun and frolics were possible due to the generosity of land owner Ralph Cook. Thanks also to Geoff and Vicky Taylor for photography; also the observers Kate Baker, Leighanne Baker, Rick Crickmore, Adrian Daish and John Coombes; and to the course setters already mentioned.

The next trial will be on the 8th January at Sweetwater Brook

What a fantastic trial to kick start the 2nd half of the 2022 Winter Series Trials Championship.

The full report will be available very soon - but for now some very important thank you's are due. Our host today is always so accomadating - Mr Trevor Strickland supports this Club now as he has done for as long as can be remembered! And we are very grateful for that huge vote of confidence.

Our thanks also to the eight Observers who - managed to get a section. There were 10 volunteers all told, we've not been in this position for many years! Adrian Daish, Harrison Crickmore, Kate Baker, Debs Payne, Jim Foot, Carole Death, Ross Haydon & Rob Payne - and in reserve were Mike Morris & Richard Crickmore. Fantastic work people.

It was great to see Viki Taylor capturing the action again through the lens, looking forward to seeing those.

And finally, our special thanks to the course setters. No mean feat to tackle an overgrown Sweetwater Brook! But The 'Baker Bunch', Sonny Gaskin & Derek Farndell did an exceptional job to produce 8 top sections.

Overall 2022 Wight Two Day Final Standings:

Knighton & Bembridge Down

View ResultsUploaded 2 years ago

Report courtesy of Alfie Haydon.

The 54th Wight Two-Day trial took place on the 3rd and 4th of September 2022, where 150 riders came over to the island to ride some tricky sections which caused some laughs and some drama. The Trials entry included many excellent riders including 2 adult riders who are currently competing in the British championship and 5 youth riders who have competed at the first 4 rounds of the British Youth championship this year. We would like to thank the Morgan family, owners of knighton sand pit for allowing us to ride at such an amazing place.

The headline which stood out the most was Chris Stay (TRRS) who has won multiple youth British championships and the Expert class in the adult British championship (2019) had an unfortunate slip which resulted in an early 5 for coming off his bike. This left George Gosden (Beta UK) to take the advantage on the Saturday going around clean losing nothing all day to take the win. Thomas Moss lost out on a tie break to Chris which is a sensational result for Thomas to be tied with Chris though losing second due to having 2 fewer cleans than Chris.

Another headline was the unfortunate accident of Gary Tarrant who dislocated his knee, resulting in him being unable to compete on both days. We all wish a speedy recovery to Gary and hope we haven't scared him away from the island and that he will return next year. In the Clubman/Expert class that ride half of the A route and half of the B route was won confidently by 10 times British Champion Steve Saunders, who only lost 2 marks all day, an extremely low score which is to be expected of a rider of his calibre. Steve lost a dab on section 7 and section 14 where his front wheel sunk into a hole on the other side of a very large tree stump he had just ridden up perfectly. Nick Hosford managed to claim second with a 3-mark buffer to Martin Carter which was decided on the tricky sections 7 and 9 where Martin lost out the most to Nick.

The Clubman class was headed up by Paul Doney who took the win on 7 with a slim but decisive 1 mark margin over island legend Rory Stephens. Rory lost an uncharacteristic dab on section 3 which most riders cleaned every lap. He did ride better on section 11 cleaning it every lap whereas Paul lost 2 over the 3 attempts at the section, but Paul rode better on section 13 where he made 2 marks up on Rory to take the win. Ben Owen came in 3rd on 9 losing marks in different places to the top 3 cleaning every section via 1 that the top 2 lost marks on yet struggled on sections 2,6,12,14 which inevitably cost him from finishing a lot higher. Islander, Adam Morgan came in 4th on 10, losing marks where everyone else did. In a highly competitive class, the top 4 were separated by only 4 marks.

In the Youth B class, who ride the same course as the adult clubman riders, was won confidently by Alfie Haydon who blew all of his competition away with a stunning result of only 3 dropped marks. This means Alfie beat all the adults as well who rode his course. Alfie will not be completely satisfied with this result though as the marks he lost were due to the rider making stupid mistakes and even 1 mark was lost as he jumped too high out of a section and lost his balance on landing. That'll teach him or did it? Kai Fisher had a good result beating Taylor Burnell to 2nd place dropping 42 marks over the long 3 laps of 15 sections. Taylor mainly loosing out on sections 9 and 11 where Kai managed to get a considerable advantage over him. Taylor's result was slightly hurt by his bike breaking down on the first lap which left him with some marks he wouldn't have wanted to lose. But there was Sunday to come for Taylor and Kai to prove who was better with no breakdowns to change the results. In the Veteran’s class, riding the C route, Anthony Chalk managed to take the win with an outstanding ride recording only 1 mark dropped all day which was the second lowest score out of the trial. Gary White came in second losing 3 dabs on the hard sections, unlike Anthony who lost a slack dab on an easy section, struggled with Knighton's soft sand yet managed to claim 2nd place. Ian Pape will be extremely happy with his ride yet extremely disappointed he rode all sections clean except section 14 where he lost a shock 5 which cost him the win inevitably. Our first and 1 of 2 female winners was Holly Boys-Guest who took a confident win over Scott Owen in the sportsman class with a 4-mark margin. The lead swinging back and forth between these two throughout the day with Holly emerging the winner. Scott won a tie break with Leigh Norris with a single clean being the difference. This was yet another competitive class with 2nd to 6th all separated by one mark between each.

In the twin shock class, Geoff Muston took a confident win in the soft sand and tight technical sections of the sand pit losing only a single mark on section 14. Just to make something clear with these low scores it is not easy to have a good trial at a low-scoring trial than it is at a high-scoring trial. The concentration and limiting stupid mistakes is incredibly hard so to go round for under 5 is a result to be applauded. Anthony Talbot came in second losing 3 marks all day losing 2 extra dabs compared to Geoff on sections 5 and 7. Douglas Johnson came in third, slightly adrift of the front 2 with a decent margin to 4th place. Only 1 rider competed in the pre-65 class where Joseph Butcher took the win piloting his big and heavy classic bike through the sections which were predominantly designed for the advancements of modern bikes.

Out of the 14 classes, only 3 were won by island riders and Jason Elford was one of them. Jason rode a sensational trial winning by a huge margin and losing only 9 marks. Nick Tait took second place from Christopher Burnell in which this battle was fought tirelessly throughout the day, ending with Nick taking the win by a slim but decisive 1-mark margin with Nick losing 34 and Christopher on 35. Youth C had the most competitors out of all the youth classes where David James lost 5 marks meaning he beat all the adults who rode the same route as him, showing the extent of how good a result this was for him. Adam Kilby came in second having to fight for second from Jake Smith, with sections 6 and 7, being the most pivotal section in deciding who took the second place. Katie Butcher took the win from Riley Baker in youth D class showing her age and the performance difference between the 2 bikes. Katie was riding a 125 cc machine and 10-year-old Riley on a Medium wheeled 80cc machine. Nonetheless, both riders had brilliant rides and they should be proud of themselves. Riley competing in his first two-day trial coped really well with the three long laps of 15 sections on his smaller machine.

On Sunday the riders set out with the intentions of improving on their riding from day 1. Some with scores to settle and get one back on mates and rivals. After a successful Saturday all the riders were set off at the top of Bembridge Down at the same times and sections as they did for day 1. Beginning their attack on the difficult course, which we would like to thank the course setters for flagging such an interesting course. Very many thanks also go to the Taylor Family for allowing us to ride at this tough and unpredictable venue.

In the Experts George Gosden rode another clean trial claiming the win both days of the Wight Two Day trial this year, riding a perfect ride all weekend, recording the best score not only in the hardest class but also of the whole trial loosing nothing - a brilliant ride. Chris unfortunately did not have his wish come true in rain coming in over night to give him a chance of being able to make up some marks on a tougher course. Despite going around for clean on the Sunday. His 5 on the Saturday costing him the overall win of the 2-day. Thomas Moss won the tie break for third riding a confident trial and matching his finishing position the day before.

The Clubman class was won yet again by Paul Doney, who rode an unbelievable trial, finishing the day on only 1 dropped mark - on the tricky section 12 which most other riders struggled with. Thomas Norris won the tie break for second with 2 more cleans than local ace Rory Stephens. Both lost 12 marks over the trial, all in different places. The top 2 showing why they are at the top being some of the few riders who managed to climb the huge hill climb. Reece talbot came in 4th, 1 mark back on 13 than the 2 tied for third. A 5 on section 14 meant Reece lost out for that 3rd spot.

In the Youth B class, Alfie Haydon once again showed he was on another level to everyone else. Losing only 4 over the whole day 1 more than he lost the day before. As mentioned earlier Alfie lost a mark for showboating and you’d of thought that would’ve taught him a lesson but he lost another mark on Sunday for doing the exact same thing. Will the boy ever learn? Kai Fisher recorded yet another brilliant result confirming that he didn’t only win on the Saturday due to Taylor Burnell’s bike breakdowns. Taylor had no breakdowns on the sunday and Kai managed to get the better of him yet again showing the talent he possess. Kai finished on 29 with Taylor 10 marks back on 39.

In the Veteran class, the top 2 from Saturday’s trial had their finishing positions reversed with a tie break deciding the final results. Gary White and Anthony Chalk both finished on 10 marks with the tie break being decided on most ones, due to both riders recording the same amount of cleans, Gary put 5 ones down compared to Anthony’s 2. Ian pape came in third yet again with a comfortable and confident ride to claim 3rd place 2 days in a row.

In the Sportsman class, Scott Owen took a convincing win, being 5 marks ahead of his closest rival, which at a low scoring trial, 5 marks was a large margin. Leigh Norris came in 2nd having a confident ride to improve on her Saturday result which was much deserved, as she missed out on 2nd place the day before, on a tie break. But on the Sunday her and Scott were in a league of their own, leading the class by a mile. Carl Barr rounded out the podium positions riding to secure a confident 3rd place with 32 dropped marks.

The Twin Shock class was won again by Geoff Muston who had outstanding rides on sections 2,5 and 11. This gave him the edge over second place Anthony Talbot who lost 19 with a margin of 5, to Douglas Johnson who was on 24. Sections 13 and 14 being where Anthony managed to get the edge on Douglas. All of the top 3 having incredible rides on sections which were set out with the Modern Bikes in mind. In the pre-65 Joseph Butcher yet again was the only rider to take on the challenge of attacking the sections on a classic bike.

Adult D is the last of the adult classes with it being won by Lloyd James who struggled on the Saturday but more than made up for it on the Sunday - winning by 7 marks with section 1 and 10 making all the difference. Islander, Derek Farndell, had a good ride to record a score of 39 to claim 3rd place at his first 2 day event.

David James blew the competition away in the Youth C class recording a score of 28, 20 marks in front of 2nd and 3rd. David rode a consistent trial riding the best in his class at all sections securing him the win. Adam Kilby and Austin Johnson were tied for 2nd place with Austin losing the tie break recording 5 less cleans leaving him to claim 3rd.

Youth D was won again by Katie Butcher who recorded a score of 42. A largely confident ride to claim the win on both days. Ollie Barr managed to finish the Sunday claiming second from Riley Baker with Ollie loosing 69 compared to Riley’s 83. None the less both riders rode super trials and should be very proud of themselves. 10-year-old Riley Baker looked fresh at the finish of a long 2 days, still riding with his usual smile and enthusiasm whilst riding his bike with his dad (also riding) and mum observing. Riley was a credit to both his parents as well as the Isle of Wight Motorcycle Club.
